Research and Education

The Bowel and Liver Trust was founded back in 1993 by a passionate patient whose life was saved by volunteers who raised the money for an operation not available in New Zealand. On return to good health he gathered a dedicated and far-sighted group of Gastroenterologists, top sports and business people wanting to foster education and research to improve the Gut health of all New Zealanders.

Since then the trust has raised over 1.5 million dollars to fund research projects However, Gut disease is on the increase and recent research we have undertaken, shows the South Island of NZ leads the world in reported cases of Inflammatory Bowel disease. Bowel cancer alone is still the number-one cause of cancer deaths in New Zealand, and many of these deaths are premature and preventable. Some of this is education – we don’t like to talk about bowels and Poos but for change sake please change that!

It’s crucial! We need focus on these hideous diseases and Research relevant to New Zealand’s needs is essential to find the cause of why New Zealanders in particular are so affected by these diseases of the Gut. There is no room for complacency as we face new challenges. Please help us to ensure positive Gut health prospects for future generations.
